You should have your Joomla site setup and have downloaded K2!

If you don’t already have the latest version of K2, you can obtain it from www.getk2.org and it is certainly worth keeping a copy for future reference.

To install K2, it is exactly the same as any other extensions installed through Joomla.

1. From the Joomla top menu, click Extensions then select Install.
2. Click on the Browse button and find your copy of K2.
3. You may also point directly to the K2 download on www.getk2.org
4. Click on the Install button.
5. When K2 has been installed correctly, you will see a confirmation.

K2 is now installed and ready to be used, just remember that at the moment you cant see anything K2 on the front side of your site just yet.

Go ahead and take a look around the K2 control panel, click on some of the functions like Add an Item to see what is included.

There are 2 versions of K2, 1 for Joomla 1.5 (K2 V2.4.x) and 1 for Joomla versions 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 (K2 V2.5.x). 
V2.4x is no longer supported, so you should consider using V2.5.x but K2Joom does hold legacy versions in archive.

What do you need to run K2?

Well, K2 is PHP 4 & 5 compatible.

So providing your server meets the minimum requirement to run a Joomla site, then you should be good to go.

To utilize the built-in video & gallery features you need to install AllVideos 3.x (free) & Simple Image Gallery PRO 2.x (support for the free Simple Image Gallery coming soon) both provided by JoomlaWorks.

You maybe thinking, "Why do I need to use k2"?

There are a large number of reasons, you speak to anyone that uses or develops for K2 and you will get more reasons, this list are some of the ones that I have found.

1. Nested Categories
   Gone are the Joomla restrictions of Sections and Categories, now you can create Sub Categories as deep as you like to create complex site structures.
2. K2 Micro Templates
   Each Category can be assigned its own individual K2 Micro Template to make it render pages in a different layouts to other categories, ideal for multi-functional sites.
3. Tagging
   Add tags to items that can then be linked to form a catalogue of information.

A simple way to add extra content into your K2.

Using this plugin allows additional content to be embedded into any K2 item, in up to 5 different positions without any core hacks to K2.
More positions can be added depending on the design of the K2 Template, we can arrange for extras to be coded for a small fee.

Then use your Google Ad code and display it in any of your K2 Items. You don't even have to use it in every item, just the ones that you want to add extra content to.

Extend K2 with many field types and powerful search

The main goal of Sherpa is to replace the standard K2 extrafields. When i say replace, i don't say hack or modify. It's just another place to manage extrafields for K2.
With Sherpa, you'll be able to :

• Create field groups (same process as standard)
• Create field and assign it to a group (same process as standard)
• Assign one or more groups to a category, an item or a user
• Create searches with different fields and different filters to retrieve categories, items or users with great ordering features
• Display search modules related to created searches with specific templates
• Link items, users, categories to other items, users or categories via a specific 'link' field
• Add new extrafield types via plugins

Of course, as usual, all that without K2 hacks.

Link many K2 items to another one easily

In K2, you can link items using tags. This is very useful, but, it's only a link to another item in the item view.
With this plugin, you can select in backend which items to link and which information will be displayed in category & item views.
Imagine you use K2 as a store, have a K2 item that details a seller and for each of the seller product, you can display seller details.
