Former owner Amelie Rives is suspected to linger here in spirit as well. This may be due in part to the fact that it saw so much bloodshed and violence during the Civil War. In fact, it is so good that some guests have returned after their death! The mansion was built in 1872 and some say that the reason why it has become one of the most haunted mansions in Virginia is that it has a natural subterranean body of water flowing underneath the house. The house is deceptively large, about 2,438 square feet with three fireplaces and five bedrooms, two downstairs and three on the partial second floor. The Grey Horse Inn is no longer in operation; the owners of the historic inn retired and sold the property to private owners in 2011.
